This is a good time to discuss the lifesaving role of vaccines. While once nearly everyone got measles, with hundreds dying from it each year, today most doctors have never seen a measles case, thanks to vaccines. Diphtheria killed 15,000 in 1921, but only 1 case has been reported to the CDC since 2004. A rubella epidemic in the mid-1960s infected 12.5 million Americans and killed 2,000 babies; 9 cases were reported in 2012.*
